About the Authors

The co-authors Richard Jenkins & Debra Detamore

Debra Detamore has been a classroom teacher in the Moore Public School District in the state of Oklahoma since 1987. She  teaches Three-Dimensional Design at Moore High School. Previously, Debra taught in the Gifted Education program and served on the Gifted Education Advisory Committee. Currently, Debra is also also serving on the board for the Young Talent in Oklahoma Art Competition, for the Oklahoma Art Educator’s Association.

In addition to her classroom teaching, Debra also guides educators in Professional Development workshops. She presents teacher workshops at state level conferences including Oklahoma Social Studies & Fine Arts Conference, OAGC (Oklahoma Association of Gifted and Creative) and Encyclomedia, as well as workshops for the Moore School District.

Debra is especially interested in developing curriculum that makes it easy for teachers of all subjects to integrate art into their classrooms.

Richard Jenkins is a published cartoonist, illustrator and educator. He is the co-creator and illustrator of the cult-classic Sky Ape series, creating four graphic novels. And he has created multiple short story comics for different anthologies. Richard also works as a freelance illustrator.

Richard is also a Teaching Artist, teaching children across the United States the creative process of cartooning & story making, drawing, and painting. He is focused on developing students’ cognitive and creative capacities. He has served on the State Arts Council Teaching Artist Rosters in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Utah, and Massachusetts. From 2007- 2009 Richard participated in the VSA Teaching Artists Communities of Practice, where he received training in curriculum design, student learning assessment, and differentiated instruction. He specialized in ESL and special needs student populations. In 2009 he was awarded the VSA Teaching Artist Fellowship form the Home Office in Washington DC.

As an Arts & Education Consultant Richard is especially interested in developing teachers creative and pedagogical capacities with arts inclusion and arts integration. He trains educators across the country in the cartooning process and teaches them strategies for integrating comics, art, and story making into their curriculum. He is a Teaching Artist Fellow for VSA Arts International, training educators in arts inclusion strategies for differentiating their instruction for ESL and Special Needs students. Richard also serves as a field reporter for the Teaching Artist Journal.
